Chihuahuas Everywhere!

imageCelebrate “Chihuahuapalooza” in June!  Statistically due to several recent  movies and breed celebrity endorsements, the shelters are alive with the sound of Chihuahuas!  In response to the rapid increase, Sacramento County Animal Care (SCACR) has put all of our fabulous Chihuahua and Chihuahua-mix adoption fees at half off adoption prices through June 30th! Studies have shown that whenever a breed is featured in a Hollywood movie or in a television series, demand for that breed increases.  The puppy mills and backyard breeders start producing to meet the demand.  When buyers find out that their individual dog isn’t the same as the dog portrayed in the media, their dogs start start filling the shelters.  That is happening now.

Chihuahuas and Chihuahua mixes are wonderful dogs and can make great companions, but they are not for everyone.

According to experts, a Chihuahua may be right for you if you want a dog who…Daisy Mae 4-05

  • Is small and easy to carry
  • Comes in a variety of sizes, coats, and colors
  • Is comical and entertaining in eccentric ways
  • Takes himself seriously (which makes his antics even funnier!)
  • Makes a great watchdog
  • Doesn’t need much exercise
  • LOVES warmth
  • Lives a long time

A Chihuahua may not be right for you if you don’t want to deal with…

  • The fragility of toy breeds
  • The fine line you need to walk with toy breeds, where you need to protect their safety, yet require them to stand on their own four feet and be well-behaved
  • Notorious housebreaking difficulties
  • Suspiciousness, shrillness, and high-strung temperaments in some lines, or when babied or spoiled or not socialized enough or made to behave

imageIf you’re in the market for a small companion to share your life, do your homework to see if a Chihuahua or Chihuahua mix might fit.  If so, come to our shelter where our volunteers will work with you to find a perfect match.
